“Wow, what an event!” Comments like this have been heard quite often during the fantastic days of our community summit in Budapest last week. Over 130 delegates from over 16 countries came together to learn and network about Novell Technologies and partner solutions. Attendees selected 5 from over 30 hotlabs, joined 5 keynotes and had a lot of fun in a city that commenced springtime 2013. Based on the outstanding feedback we’ve received, we are already in the process of scheduling the next summit.
Review – Successful Open Horizons Summit in Budapest

Novell Filr – 3rd party support discussed at the OH Summit
Wednesday’s lunch at the OH Summit was used to discuss how 3rd party interacts with Novell’s Filr Offering. Indeed the delegates were surprised to learn, that most of the vendors have already a firm roadmap in place, if the Filr story fits into their portfolio. So here is a brief summary of our interactive conversation in Budapest
Filr Client Deployment:
The Bundle Commander Team has been working closely with Novell to makesure Bundle Commander supports Filr. This homework is already accomplished. Within the ‘Application Setup Center’ you can easily download the setups for the Filr Windows client for both x86 as well as x64. Learn more…
Content=File Sharing:
How can I forward web based files into my Filr system? ShareOnVibe allows effortless content sharing into Vibe. By default, ShareOnVibe also works with Filr out of the box, as both technologies are built on a similar platform by the Novell development team. The team of co3tools will be working on a Filr edition, to adapt the existing feature set to the special needs involved, when it comes to manage file downloads from the web.
Single Sign On:
WSTrust is the #1 Instant SSO Solution for Novell customers embracing Novell core solutions like Vibe & GroupWise but also partner products like GWAVA, Retain or GroupLink’s everything Helpdesk. SSO functionality for Filr is nothing more, but the next logical step for the TDP development team lead by Vaclav Samsa. Preperations are on the way! Stay tuned for more.
Filr & eSecurity:
Messaging and eSeucrity is a combination of words, that rings a green bell for most of the customers and partners. Novell’s biggest technology partner GWAVA already offers protection for GroupWise (GWAVA), GroupWise WebAccess (WASP) and the online collaboration plattform Vibe (GWAVA4Vibe). “With GWAVA4Vibe we have built a product, that can easily be customized for the needs of Filr” says Herbert Lefering, VP for GWAVA in EMEA “We have identified the importance and reviewed our solution roadmap. GWAVACon coming up at the end of September in Duesseldorf will show what GWAVA has to offer for Filr!

Novell Collaboration Round Table
In Dusseldorf at the end of May the Novell Collaboration Product Management team met with around 50 partners and others from through-out Europe to discuss the GroupWise and Vibe roadmaps and to get feedback on enhancements to the product set. Product managers, Tracy Smith and Kai Reichert did a great job in leading the 2 day round table, while Lynn Christiannsen gave an interesting presentation on the human factors work that he leads, working with the development team to provide better user interfaces and standardisation across the applications.
These events are now regular events in the calendar. With Open Horizons represented this is a great way to provide input to future releases.

Windows application deployment can be done 90% faster
With Bundle Commander, software supplier ROVABU Software offers system and desktop administrators advanced tooling for the deployment of Windows applications with Novell ZENworks Configuration Management. This tool shortens the necessary deployment time by more than 90 percent and will be officially launched at the TechExchangeXL in Ede, which takes place on June 6.
Administrators spend a lot of time configuring switches and settings in order to make the deployment of Windows applications on the network as efficient and fast as possible. Many of the parameters are available in the knowledge base of IT Ninja, formerly AppDeploy.com, but the Bundle Commander tool automatically creates a “Windows Bundle” with a wizard in ZENworks Configuration Management. Where previously the system and desktop admins spent a half day figuring out all the correct settings, the tool creates a Windows Bundle in less than ten minutes. This automated deployment method also increases consistency. ROVABU CEO Roel van Bueren: “Everyone who purchases the product will have a guaranteed uniform Windows applications deployment.”
Two versions
The beta version of the product became available in August of last year, after which around 500 beta testers from Australia, the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Austria and the United Kingdom had a first look at Bundle Commander. Eventually, ROVABU chose to launch two different versions: the free Standard Edition and Professional Edition, which comes with an annual license. “The free version is the community version, which helps administrators to find the correct switches and settings on ITNinja.com,” says Van Bueren. The Professional version contains the Configuration Wizards and support for the most common Windows applications from Adobe, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Novell and and integrated with the ‘Packaging Robot’ solution of BRAIN FORCE.
“The big advantage is not only that all of the settings for a large number of common applications are already configured, but also the fact that the research on what settings would be most useful to your organization has already been done,” says beta tester Tom Dalderup, IT Manager at TV Rijnmond.
Dutch pride
Van Bueren is proud of the product. “It is great that we, as a Dutch company, are able to collaborate with a site like ITNinja.com, which is the largest information website in the world for package and deployment specialists.” Emiel den Brok, IT Specialist at the Province of Noord-Brabant and one of the beta testers: “It is clear that Bundle Commander is the response to the community’s needs instead of a supplier’s.” The tool saves Den Brok a great deal of time in the ZCM migration project that is currently underway at the Province. “Bundle Commander automates tasks that are normally performed manually. This saves a lot of time and effort.”
Schools were also enthusiastic about the tool, adds ROVABU CEO Van Bueren: “Schools have limited time and budget, so every tool that is both affordable and decreases the amount of administration is welcomed with open arms.”
Dirk Schmidt, Vice President & General Manager Novell EMEA: “I’m very excited about the Bundle Commander Release. The Novell ZENworks team worked closely with ROVABU Software BV to make this a high quality product and to get an optimal integration with Novell ZENworks Configuration Management. This is a perfect example of Novell’s commitment and that of its partners to optimize the value customers derive from their current investments and to provide compelling reasons to extend their Novell investment to meet their evolving business objectives.”

Vibe Success Story: Gemeente Rijswijk (The Municipality of Rijswijk)
The Municipality of Rijswijk implemented Novell Vibe collaborative software, improving staff efficiency by streamlining work processes and enabling easier access to shared information.
Challenge
The Municipality of Rijswijk processes large volumes of information for a number of public services. The organisation previously relied on numerous manual, paper-based administrative processes, which were time-consuming and inefficient. Additionally, the organisation lacked a central repository for data, making it difficult for users to share documents and jointly manage information.
“It was often challenging to quickly and accurately access information, as there was no way for users to share documents,” said Manuella Harrand-Tittse, Information Management Consultant at the Municipality of Rijswijk. “The IT department began to receive requests from employees for new team collaboration tools, as they were growing increasingly frustrated by the limitations of the existing ones.”
The Municipality wanted to make it easier for employees to work together and share knowledge, both within the organisation and with external partners. It looked for a suitable collaboration solution, which would enhance cooperation between employees and improve organisational efficiency.

Deploying Linux images can be fun!
Johannes Renner, one of the developers in our SUSE Manager team, recently posted a very useful blog post about using SUSE Studio to create Linux images. The latest update for SUSE Manager makes this a lot simpler.
He wrote:
You already know that it’s possible to use SUSE Studio for creating Linux images that will automatically register with SUSE Manager once deployed to a virtual host and booted for the first time.
From now on you can make use of this feature in a much more convenient way. The final piece of the integration between the two SUSE products is now included with the latest update for SUSE Manager.
Starting up a new virtual system using SUSE Manager can now be simplified to the following steps:
- Choose the image from a list.
- Specify deployment parameters.
- Go for it.
For the details, read this post.

Build a Better GroupWise with Blueprint for Reload from GWAVA
Using blueprints to build a home didn’t start until the turn of the 20th century – they were actually first used for building large sailing ships in the mid 1800′s. Since that time, preparing blueprints have become the standard for building millions of homes, buildings and structures. Blueprints have three main purposes – Design, Road Map, and Details. Blueprint for Reload from GWAVA is no different.
Design
Could you imagine making decisions without a design? How long to cut a board, where to put a wall? It could turn out pretty disastrous. Blueprint for Reload will help your business make many informed decisions. Blueprint for Reload gathers up the business information of your GroupWise system and lays it out in a format that empowers you to make correct decisions building the most efficient GroupWise system.
For example, the weekly executive overview report enables businesses to know, from a high overview – to an individual user, exactly what is going on in the GroupWise system. A key benefit of the report is the ability to identify quickly mailboxes that are inactive and still live on the system. These inactive mailboxes cost your organization money, with BluePrint you can quickly identify and react to the information.
Road Map
A blueprint gives you guidance from beginning to end and all the details in between. With the increasing need organizations have to archive and retain data for compliance and legal issues the challenge is knowing how much, what and when to archive. Blueprint for Reload is your road map to efficient, successful archiving. Because you already have a GWAVA product, Retain from GWAVA can integrate quickly and help with archiving.
And everything in between? Blueprint from Reload allows you to see mailbox information for every user on the GroupWise system. Not only can you see the information, but with a push of a button you can email the user to remind them to archive, clean up data, etc. Blueprint for Reload will help IT administrators become proactive protectors of the GroupWise mail system.
Details
Content is king! We’ve heard that so often these days, and today’s Internet usage proves it – with over 7 TB of data being produced daily. Blueprint for Reload is no different. Not only does Blueprint for Reload deliver enormous amounts of data, it also delivers it in a format that is comprehensible, manipulatable, and informative. Reports delivered by Blueprint for Reload can be delivered in HTML, CSV, ZOHO, Google Doc, and most importantly – on the go – to your mobile device (iPhones, iPads, Android devices).
With Blueprint for Reload it’s all in the details! Quit trying to build a solid foundation without a Blueprint. Come learn more about how Blueprint for Reload can benefit your business. http://www.gwava.com/products/blueprint-for-reload.html

New Workspace for Tablet Users
As more Vibe users start to integrate tablets into their arsenal of devices, it becomes important to create layouts that are optimized for those devices. This landing page was built with the tablet user in mind. You will find that it is easier to navigate, view and create entries in Vibe using your tablet compared to other landing page layouts.
This landing page has been optimized for tablet users. The large, centered icons make it easier to navigate using your tablet. Each icon directs you to a page that has the contents clearly displayed in the center of the landing page. If you want to return to the main landing page, simply select the back button on screen. The landing page file below does not contain any content besides the file folders and layout. While being optimized for tablet users, this landing page is completely functional for all aspects of Vibe access. To implement, download the zip file below, import into Vibe, and you are ready to start using this landing page on your tablet.
This workspace was built with 9 different landing pages. It could have been done with less. Please remember these example workspaces are just that, examples. Users can implement these into their own system or they can get an idea of what they want and make a better workspace. These are not templates to be placed into Vibe through the administrators console. They should be imported into Vibe where the workspace is needed. We have recently released an article, “Importing Workspaces”, which describes the process of importing one of our demo workspaces. This workspace leverages the use of permalinks so it will need to be configured for your particular Vibe installation. You can find this configuration guide on the download page.
To download the configuration guide and this workspace visit the Vibe Resource Library.

An introduction to system snapshot and rollback with Snapper and BtrFS on SLES 11 SP2
With the release of Service Pack 2 for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11, the support to a new (better) file system and a new (snappy) tool have been introduced providing the ability to do system snapshots rollbacks, a very powerful and interesting feature. These are BtrFS and Snapper respectively.
BtrFS
Btrfs is a new copy-on-write (COW) filesystem for Linux aimed at implementing advanced features while focusing on fault tolerance, repair and easy administration. BtrFS supports file system snapshots of subvolumes where a snapshot is a copy of the state of a subvolume at a certain point of time and a subvolume is like a directory, it is empty when it is created and can hold files and other directories. Snapshots and subvolumes are basically the same thing, they are separate “subvolume trees” within the “parent” file system. By default there is at least one subvolume in every Btrfs filesystem, which is named “default”
Snapper
Snapper is a tool for managing btrfs snapshots, it allows to create, delete and compare them as well as revert differences between them. In other words, it allows users to view older versions of files and revert changes.
Snapper is available as a command line interface tool and a YaST module.
By default Snapper and Btrfs on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Sp2 are set up to serve as an “undo tool” for system changes made with YaST and zypper. Before and after running a YaST module or zypper, a snapshot is created. Snapper lets you compare the two snapshots and provides means to revert the differences between the two snapshots. The tools also provide system backups by creating hourly snapshots of the system subvolumes.
Installation
In order to use BtrFS and Snapper as an “undo tool” for file system changes, the steps to take during the installation of the operating system are as simple as partitioning the hard disk with YaST and creating a partition for the boot mount point using an alternative file system, i.e. ext3 (currently it is not possible to boot from Btrfs partitions), and specifying the BtrFS for the root file system. Keep in mind that partitions containing snapshots need to be larger than “normal” ones. As a rule of thumb you should consider using twice the size than you normally would.
When selecting the file system Btrfs the button “subvolumes handling” is enabled to allow you to manage subvolumes. By default YaST automatically creates the following subvolumes when using BtrFS for the root file system:
- /tmp
- /opt
- /srv
- /var/crash
- /var/spool
- /var/log
- /var/run
- /var/tmp
These subvolumes are automatically created in order to exclude the specified path from snapshotting. For example, the directory /var/log is made a subvolume since reverting logs makes searching for problems difficult.
That’s all is needed. Once completed with the partitioning it is possible to proceed with the installation as usual, Snapper will automatically be installed when the BtrFS file system is used. When planing for partitioning remember that snapshots will be available only for those partitions using BtrFS. So for example, if you create a own partition for /home consider to use BtrFS to take advantage of its functionalities.
Snapper in action
Now the system is ready to be used, Snapper is pre-configured for doing rollbacks of YaST or zypper changes. This means that every time you start a YaST module or a zypper transaction, two snapshots are created: 1) a “pre-snapshot” capturing the state of the filesystem before the start of the module and 2) a “post-snapshot” after the module has been finished.
By default, the last 100 YaST and zypper snapshots are being kept. It is possible to change this behavior as well as other settings of Snapper in the configuration file for the specific volume located in /etc/snapper/configs.
As an example, let’s now try to modify a system setting using YaST and see how Snapper behaves.
- Let’s launch YaST and simply create a new user with some basic information. (yast2 usersfrom command line)
- Once the user has been created close YaST and open it again, this time selecting the Snapper module, and see what it shows (yast2 snapperfrom command line).
This is the list of the available root filesystem snapshots. To fully understand this table it is important to understand that essentially there are three types of snapshots:
- Single – used for storing the file system state in a certain time.
- Pre – used for storing the file system state *before* the changes are made with YaST or zypper
- Post – used for storing the file system state *after* the changes are made with YaST or zypper
In our picture, notice the snapshot with ID “1″ marked with the description “timeline”. This is a snapshot of type “single” which help us to introduce another great feature about Snapper, the hourly snapshot. Apart from the YaST and zypper snapshots, Snapper by default creates hourly snapshots of the system partition (/). You can use these backup snapshots to restore files that have accidentally been deleted or modified beyond recovery. Even more interesting, using the Snapper’s diff feature you can also find out which modifications have been made at a certain point of time.
Back to our example, notice the two snapshots with ID “2″ and “3″ being on the same line and marked with the description “yast users”. These are basically the Pre and Post snapshots which are coupled together to define the changes done by special operation, in our case the creation of the new user made via YaST.
- Let’s select the pair of Pre and Post snapshots from the list referring to the changes we have applied via YaST when creating the new user. In our example the pair with ID “2-3″. Click on “Show Changes” and following appears:
The tree on the left shows all the files that were modified between creating the Pre and the Post snapshots. On the right side, it is shown the description generated when the first snapshot was created and the time of creation of both snapshots.
When a file is selected in the tree, you see the changes done to it: for a file which is changed it is possible to display a “diff” of it, for a file which has been created or removed it is simply indicated with a message “New file was created” or “New file was removed” respectively.
- Now let’s select the file /etc/passwd from the tree and see the changes for it after having added the new user:
- Let’s then simulate a situation where the administrator of the server accidentally deletes the user just created and relative home directoryfrom YaST (deleting the user from command line is not the same. Remember that by default snapshots are automatically taken when running YaST or zypper and on hourly basis)
- As before, let’s see what Snapper now shows:
- A new pair of Pre and Post snapshots is listed referring to the latest changes we have applied via YaST when deleting the user “Snappy”. Let’s now select it and see the new changes for the file /etc/passwd
- Now let’s finally taste the goodness of Snapper and BtrFS simulating the “undo” of the user delete. Let’s select the files to be restored, in this case all the files under /etc and /home, and click on “Restore Selected”. A dialog listing all the files appears.
- At this point click “Yes” to proceed with the restore of the user and.. that’s it, if we now take a look at the list of existing users (yast2 usersfrom command line) we can see the user back where he was before:
The same operations (and even more) we have done so far with YaST are also available via command line, of course. The following are some examples:
Get a list of yast and zypper snapshots:
# snapper list -t pre-post
Get a list of changed files for a snapshot pair with ID 2 and 3:
# snapper status 2..3
To display the diff for a certain file:
# snapper diff 2..3 /etc/passwd
To restore all the changes:
# snapper -v undochange 2..3
To restore changes of one specific file:
# snapper -v undochange 2..3 /etc/passwd
…and many others..
Of course, this is intended to be only a simple example of the use of Snapper, however it is easy to think of many other scenarios where it can be used to get tremendous benefits not only in terms of fast system backup and restore but also as tool for tracking the activity on the system.
Many other examples and information about Snapper are available with the “SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP2 Administration Guide” available at the following link: http://www.suse.com/documentation/sles11/book_sle_admin/?page=/documentation/sles11/book_sle_admin/data/cha_snapper.html
A very interesting and funny video about Snapshot and Rollback from the Kernel Hacker Greg Kroah-Hartman and SUSE Product Manager Matthias Eckermann is available at the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9H7e6BcI5Fo&feature=player_embedded

GroupWise: Novell Data Synchronizer Mobility Pack 1.2.2 Available!
Novell announces the immediate availability of Update 2 for the Novell Data Synchronizer Mobility Pack. We continue to build on the quality and robust capability of Update 1, which shipped in December 2011.
This release, which follows closely on our 12/15 1.2.1 release, is focused primarily on defect fixes. In the last two months we’ve addressed more than 60 issues, over half had been marked with a Services Priority indicating customer visibility and more urgent customer need.
The following product improvements are also included:
- On-Demand LDAP Group Polling: In Synchronizer Web Admin, you can cause Synchronizer to reread LDAP groups in order to immediately bring the latest changes into Synchronizer. On the Manage Global Settings page, click Poll LDAP Now.
- Disk Space Monitoring Tool: The datasync-diskcheck.sh script runs automatically along with the Synchronizer services. If the /var partition where log files are stored becomes more than 90% full, the script stops the Synchronizer services to prevent data loss as a result of running out of disk space.
- Event Recovery: If the Synchronizer service goes down unexpectedly, or if you stop it while it still has unprocessed events in its queue, the Synchronizer service handles previously received but unprocessed events when you restart it. This prevents the loss of unprocessed events.
The readme with all of the details is available!
Looking ahead, we also hope to deliver a Data Sync (not mobility) 1.2.2 release in a couple of weeks to provide better support for our 3S connectors. We are working with our partners and will announce the availability of the update as soon as possible.
We’ve scoped the work for our Mobility 1.2.3 release. Again, this will be focused on quality–the bulk of our work will be knocking down defects, with a heavy emphasis on calendar. We’re estimating another 8-week cycle – target the end of April if all goes as planned.
Following our Mobility 1.2.3 release, the plan is to return the attention to Eenou. This release we will version 1.3 and the current plan is to include features like task support, improved monitoring and admin improvements – as well as ongoing bug fixes.
Frequent, regular and increased stability and functionality with each release!!
Download instructions remain the same as all previous updates and release for Mobility. I will refer you back to a previous blog where the basic details are all still accurate.
Enjoy!

GroupWise: Security Alert: GroupWise 8.0.x
Novell is releasing a FTF (Field Test File) for a security related issue with GroupWise 8.0.x This issue was already resolved in the original release of GroupWise 2012 and GroupWise 2012 is not susceptible to this issue.
Description: The GroupWise Client for Windows is vulnerable to an exploit where a malformed address book could cause heap memory corruption, which could lead to remote code execution under the privilege of the user that opened the address book. The exploitation of the bug requires user/programmer intervention. Simply using the 8.0.x client does not expose you to any security issues. In order for a user’s workstation to be affected, an end user would actually need to receive and open one of these “malformed” address books, so the security concern can also be mitigated by educating your end-users.
This issue was reported by Protek Research Lab who specializes in searching for and reporting potential issues with software products. This issue has not been reported by any customer.
We will continue to disclose and communicate all security issues that are reported to us and that we have fixed in a particular release of our product.
Details
Affected versions:
GroupWise Client for Windows 8.0x up to and including 8.02HP3.
Previous versions of GroupWise are likely also vulnerable but are no longer supported.
Novell bug 733885, CVE-2011-4189
Related TID: 7010205: Security Vulnerability – GroupWise 8 Windows Client Address Book Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
As stated in previous blog posts:
Please know that this fix will also be included in GroupWise 8.0.3 which is scheduled to release in just a few short weeks and because you will be required to roll out a new Windows Client in order to protect your organization against this vulnerability, you may decide to wait until 8.0.3 is released.
If you are running GroupWise 6.x or 7.x, you will need to upgrade to at least GroupWise 8.0.2 HP3 and this FTF in order to be fully protected. If you are running GroupWise 2012, you already have this fix.

Virtualizing GroupWise 2012 with ZENworks Application Virtualization 9.0
Last month Novell released ZENworks Application Virtualization (ZAV) 9.0. In my last blog post I explained that the high-level focus areas for the release were as follows:
- New automated packaging techniques
- Online template library
- Improved security features
- Improved streaming features
Today, I want to focus on Novell’s Online template library. In ZAV 9.0, the template list and Desktop Scan matching service are hosted via an online Web Service, this allows the template list and scanning service to be constantly refined and updated. Each time the template list is accessed, the template library is checked online for updates and the template list is updated accordingly. So why am I repeating myself?
GroupWise 2012
For the last few weeks, we have been trialing a virtual version of GroupWise 2012 client. Now that we are happy that the template works well, this template has now been published to our online repository. In short, this means that all ZAV 9.0 users can select GroupWise 2012 from a self-updating list and virtualize the email client following these steps:
1. Open ZAV Studio
2. Click ‘Build a virtual application from a template’
3. Select Novell GroupWise Client 2012 template, click next
4. Wait for ZAV Studio to download the application content
5. Choose sandbox location, click next
6. Select Output location for GroupWise 2012 client
7. Click Finish
So in under 10 mouse clicks you can have a virtual GroupWise 2012 client. No other vendor makes application virtualization as easy as this. Note, GroupWise 2012 does not have to be installed for this process to work.
Registering GroupWise to the MAILTO protocol
If you want to manage the installation of virtual GroupWise along with desktop shortcuts and registration of the MAILTO: protocol then virtual GroupWise can be registered to an endpoint using the spoonreg tool. Simply running spoonreg.exe [Virtual GroupWise Client.exe] will generate the desktop and start menu items specified in the virtual application definition for items such as Address Book and Notify, the registration process will also register MAILTO to the virtual copy of GroupWise allowing you to right-click on a file and select Mailto Recipient.
In addition to GroupWise 2012 this week, Google Chrome 17 and Mozilla Firefox 10 templates were also added to the online repository last week. Novell will continue to grow this list. As ever, please let me know where we should focus our efforts. Enjoy!

Upgrade automatically and unattended to OES11
You want to get on the latest software to get the best support and latest features – but what about all the time it takes to do the upgrade? Novell just made it simpler by providing an automated upgrade mechanism to get your OES2 64bit servers upgraded in a fraction of the time it would normally take.
The process is simple -
Setup a network install source for your servers that contains the OES11 / SLES files, along with a couple other pre-configured files the automated ugprade will use.
Before you down your server to be upgraded, run a script that will ask for your eDirectory password. This will encrypt the password making it available for the automated upgrade.
Next, reboot the server and start the upgrade, pointing the server to the installation source and configuration files. That’s it.
Repeat the last two steps for all other servers on your network.
OES11 is ready for you…it’s time to upgrade!

Novell GroupWise 2012 Boosts Workforce Productivity; Latest Social Collaboration Tools Now Integrate into Secure and Reliable Email Platform
Novell today announced the availability of Novell® GroupWise® 2012, a powerful collection of collaborative tools that improves the way users work and interact. The latest version of Novell GroupWise 2012 includes features to support productivity across the enterprise, including an enhanced web interface, web-based iPad support and integration with Novell® Vibe™ and Skype*. Novell GroupWise 2012 also demonstrates Attachmate’s commitment to provide more frequent product updates that reflect customer needs.
GroupWise 2012 extends secure and reliable messaging into the world of social collaboration, boosting personal productivity with integrated Skype presence, SMS and click-to-call features. New Novell Vibe integrations bring team productivity, document and content management, and business process automation into the familiar Novell GroupWise interface millions of users rely on for daily productivity. Novell has devoted significant engineering time to enhancing these collaborative capabilities, delivering an environment that combines the ubiquity and reliability of email with the latest team collaboration tools to maximize information sharing and idea exchange.
According to a recent Market Trends report from Gartner, “During the past 15 years, most organizations have depended on email as one of their de facto forms of electronic business communications. However, other forms of communications—such as IM, text messages, wikis, blogs, collaboration tools and social networking—are growing in prevalence and should become part of an organization’s overall electronic communications strategy. “i With Novell GroupWise 2012, organizations don’t have to choose either their proven enterprise email solution or the new collaborative tools users want to leverage from the consumer space. They can bring these next-generation capabilities right into the Novell GroupWise interface their users know and love.
“The quality of Novell GroupWise 2012 reaffirms our commitment to Novell technologies. In fact, we’ve been running the product in production—with very good results—for most of its beta cycle,” said Edmund Weber, technical specialist at the University of Regensburg, Germany. “The product is rock solid; in fact, we did not have one single post office agent failure during the entire beta phase. More than 40,000 users at the University are enjoying the advanced functionalities in Novell GroupWise 2012, including the much faster user experience for Web access. I would recommend that everyone upgrade to this version of the product.”
Enhanced mobility features include a new, streamlined Web access interface that allows users to be more productive on the go while also reducing the client administration burden for IT. Providing a “low-touch” IT alternative to the synchronization currently available via Novell Data Synchronizer, Novell GroupWise 2012 also provides custom web templates giving iPad users the ability to directly access their Novell GroupWise 2012 post offices to check and create messages, appointments, tasks and more.
“Novell GroupWise 2012 is an important part of our go-forward market strategy,” said Bob Flynn, president and general manager, Novell. “GroupWise 2012 demonstrates our commitment to invest in engineering excellence and customer focus by making it easier for organizations to offer social collaboration tools as part of their existing, tried-and-true GroupWise email platform.”
Availability
GroupWise 2012 is available for $143 per user license. For more information about GroupWise, visit www.novell.com/groupwise.

ZENworks Application Virtualization 9 now available
ZENworks Application Virtualization 9 has just launched. This product has been key to the ZENworks portfolio since it was first introduced in September of 2008. This latest release adds a lot of nifty features that people have been asking for.
What’s New in Version 9:
In a nutshell, Version 9 is all about making it easier for IT to give the workforce the applications they need. ZAV 9 does this by making it easier and faster for IT to build fully-configured virtual applications as well as giving users more options on how to access those applications once virtualized.
- Application Harvesting: Enterprises have a long list of applications that they have installed across their organizations–all custom configured to suit the needs of the workforce. Version 9 lets you “harvest” these applications, and their configuration settings, by scanning your installed applications and then dynamically building virtual versions of these applications from recipes pulled from a Novell application repository. Using this approach IT administrators can quickly virtualize their application portfolio with minimal effort.
- Web-updated Application Templates: With version 9, application templates are updated via the web–gone are the days of having to install the latest release of ZAV to get the latest templates.
- Application Jukeboxing: ZAV takes the time and hassle out of streaming an entire application suite when you only need one sub-application to run (think MS Word within the entire MS Office Suite). Version 9 gives the workforce the ability to quickly stream only the applications they need, even when these applications are sub-components of a larger suite installation. No more waiting for applications you don’t need.
- Offline Streaming Support: Stream an application one time, and then run it forever without streaming again (no need for a persistent web connection). We consider this the “airplane friendly” version of application streaming.
- Application Control: In addition to being able to time-bomb applications, version 9 gives you more control over how applications can be used. This includes requiring that the users meet Microsoft AD criteria, and/or that the device running the application is managed by ZENworks. This helps ensure unintended “license creep” doesn’t happen.

Novell ZENworks Application Virtualization 9 Delivers Reliable Virtual Applications Faster
Novell today announced the availability of Novell ZENworks® Application Virtualization 9. This latest release leverages a unique approach to application harvesting that enables enterprise IT staff to tap into a library of trusted resources and find the best stored version to build the necessary virtual application dynamically. By harvesting work that has already been done, IT users can scan a target endpoint and quickly build a set of needed virtual applications, saving time and ensuring quality.
ZENworks Application Virtualization 9 includes access to a large number of pre-built templates for building virtual applications based upon tested and optimized application configurations. These Web-based templates provide IT administrators with access to a central repository that includes the most up-to-date versions of common applications. Building applications using templates greatly reduces the manual labor necessary to configure virtual applications, while Web-based access eliminates the need to upgrade the version of ZENworks Application Virtualization each time an application needs to be updated, reducing IT labor and costs.
“ZENworks Application Virtualization 9 removes the complications typically associated with application deployment by building upon work that IT has already completed,” said Eric Varness, vice president of product management and marketing at Novell. “By harvesting from our new library of trusted, pre-built application templates, customers can reduce the costs, complexity and time delays required for application compatibility testing and management.”
Additional customer benefits of Novell ZENworks Application Virtualization 9 include:
- Offline Streaming Support – Novell provides the fastest adaptive application streaming in the industry and now offers the ability for streaming applications to be executed without a persistent web connection.
- “Juke-Boxing” – Reducing the time and hassle associated with downloading multiple sub-products that aren’t being used in an enterprise, “Juke-Boxing” affords the ability to launch individual products from within a single application stream for suite applications.
- Application Control – Ensuring IT can maintain compliance with its license agreements, portable virtualized applications can now be configured to only execute for users who meet defined criteria, such as Microsoft Active Directory membership or if the device is being managed by ZENworks.

Here’s a Why You Are Not Moving to Exchange 2010
Gert ter Burg von GWCheck hat aus der NGW-List zahlreiche Gründe herausgesucht, warum ein Wechsel von GroupWise zu Exchange wirklich keinen Sinn macht.
Cause of these differences, found and listed by several people in the NGW List …
Busy Search – Exchange has nothing in comparison – suggesting times just doesn’t cut it for me
Shared Folders – Exchange can share them, but I have to know way too much to be able to actually get at them, and if it’s a folder the whole company shares there really no way for me to know that.
Contacts – we have several “company wide” address books that I didn’t know about for many months, it was painful to try to find contact info for customers; oh and I hate looking up a person’s email address and having to copy it in order to be able to send an email…I should be able to double-click their email address and have a new message window pop up with their addres already populated
Tasks – it’s a personal preference, but I prefer the GW client tasks handling over Outlook
MM
GroupWise is the “Single Instance Message Store” (SIMS). SIMS allows a user to send a message with an attachment to multiple recipients within the GroupWise system making only one copy of the attachment per Post Office, unlike most email packages on the market today, which makes a copy for every recipient, thereby increasing their storage needs exponentially.
Reliability – Microsoft Exchange is the world’s leading target for hackers, and not just because of its widespread use. Hooks in the code enable easy third-party integration, yes-but also provide entryways into your system. Reactive patching and other Microsoft security measures simply can’t keep up with the speed and innovation that hackers demonstrate when attacking a system.
The CERT Coordination Center (CERT/CC) is a Department of defense-sponsored, federally funded research and development center. CERT.org found Microsoft Exchange to be far more vulnerable to viruses and worms than other collaboration solutions. Malware enters Exchange easily through ActiveX and Visual Basic acceptances in Outlook, leaving the door wide open to costly and disruptive virus attacks and potential data compromises.
According to CERT.org Vulnerability Notes Database, as of September 2008, Novell GroupWise had only 12 vulnerabilities documented. Microsoft Exchange had 89 vulnerabilities and IBM Notes had 81 vulnerabilities documented. This continues to demonstrate the fact that GroupWise is the industry leader when it comes to securing your email and calendaring solution.
Scalability – With GroupWise you can support up to 10,000 users on a single server. And centralized, policy-based administration means one administrator can manage several thousand GroupWise user accounts; in fact, many current Novell customers manage 5,000-10,000 users with only one administrator.
Silently Retract Messages – Outlook can retract messages, but whether successful or not, the recipient knows that the attempt was made in Outlook (and the attempt includes the subject line) Message Tracking – Outlook sends copies of messages to every recipient. Therefore, if you want to know if someone opened or received your email, you must ask for a receipt at the time you send it. Not getting a receipt back, however, does not mean the email delivery failed. It could be that the recipient’s system doesn’t want to give you a receipt (Outlook users can make that choice themselves).
View Attachments – In Outlook, attachments must be opened or saved. So if you receive an attachment created with a program you don’t have, you are out of luck. IT-savvy folks will figure out a way around it, but regular users won’t know to save it, then “Open With” a compatible program because there is no “Open With” in Outlook.
Losing Attachments When Changing Type – If you try to change an email to an appointment by dragging it from the mailbox to the calendar, the attachment disappears-only the contents of the email stay intact. Outlook keeps the email in the mailbox and copies it in the calendar.
Reminder Notes – There are no “Reminder Notes” in Outlook. There are notes, which are dated, but they are not related to the calendar and therefore cannot recur. The equivalent in Outlook is an All Day Event. All Day Events appear at the top of the calendar day before 8 a.m. (or whatever time is set as the start of the work day).
Recurring Appointment Random Patterns – Not all recurring appointments follow a pattern (every Monday, the last Friday of the month, every 14 days, etc.). Some are random, like taking vacation days. To use the recurring feature in Outlook, there must be a pattern.
Tracking Calendar Items that were sent – There is no sent item when an appointment/task is sent in Outlook. The organizer of the appointment automatically gets a copy of the appointment on their own calendar, which becomes the tracking copy. If that tracking copy is deleted (removed from Deleted Items), there is no way to manage that item. If an appointment/task needs to be changed or removed, it must be done on each recipient’s account.
Recipients of Meetings can Move the Item – There is no sent item when an appointment/task is sent in Outlook.
Tasks – In Outlook, tasks sent to multiple people cannot be managed by the person who sent them (called the Organizer). Remember only copies of tasks are sent to the recipient and changes to tasks require an update message sent. For tasks, apparently Outlook is unable to update tasks if sent to multiple people. Therefore if you sent a task to two or more individuals and then you need to change the task or recall it, you cannot. That change (or recall) would have to be done individually for each recipient.
Sending Appointments – When an Outlook appointment is sent, a copy of the appointment-not a link to the appointment-is sent. Therefore when the organizer changes the appointment, an additional message is sent to the original recipient to alert them. If the recipient deletes that email message, the calendar item is not updated. The same thing applies when deleting an item: the recipient must click “Remove from Calendar” or the item will stay on the calendar forever. Also, for any update, if the recipient acknowledges the update on the calendar, the matching email stays in the Inbox until the user deletes it.
Calendar Tool Tips – In Outlook, there are no tool tips, so details like from, to, cc, place, time, and subject are only visible when you open the item.
*Resources – “Resources” are set up as a public folder in Outlook, however there are many resources that will require an actual account in Exchange. All accounts in Exchange require a license, even if those accounts are not real people.
Proxy Rights – Instead of “proxy rights,” Outlook uses delegates which are more granular. Outlook is folder-based which allows you to give rights to your Inbox, but not your Sent Items or Deleted Items.
Viewing tasks in calendar(s) – You cannot view future tasks on your calendar in Outlook. The task list that appears on the Day or the Week View is a static list of tasks for that day. Clicking on a day in the future changes only the appointments, not the tasks. Therefore to see future tasks, you must look at the task list (where there is no calendar).
Discussion Threads – The relationships of posted items in a discussion thread are lost when converted from GroupWise and cannot be reestablished.
Dragging contacts to start Email – In Outlook, you cannot drag contacts from the Contacts folder and drop them on the mailbox to begin a new email message.
Deleting recurring appointments not recoverable – If you delete a recurring appointment in Outlook, it does not go into the Trash. It is not recoverable.
